Hiking Massachusetts: The Lists

Welcome to Hiking Massachusetts Peaks, a guide to discovering the hidden highlands of the Bay State. This blog features a growing collection of curated peak lists and rewarding hikes throughout Massachusetts. Each one is designed to help you experience the state’s rich natural diversity, from rocky bluffs in the Taconics to windswept coastal ridges. At the heart of this project is the Massachusetts 50 Highest Public Peaks list: a carefully selected challenge that took me years to research, hike, and refine. I’ve been hiking for much of my life, but I am no mountaineer—simply someone who finds peace and joy in the trail. Whether you’re a casual walker or a dedicated peak-seeker, I think you’ll find these lists a great way to explore some of the Commonwealth’s more interesting and overlooked landscapes. More lists and hiking adventures will be added soon. Enjoy the journey!
My List of Lists:
Massachusetts 50 Highest Public Peaks
Call it my pet project, my trail-tested obsession—The Massachusetts 50 Highest Public Peaks list is the centerpiece of this website. This list highlights the 50 highest peaks in Massachusetts that are all located on public land and reachable by established trails. After years of research and exploration, I’ve compiled this guide to help hikers avoid the guesswork—no trespassing, no bushwhacking—just great hikes to some of the Bay State’s highest and most rewarding summits.
Massachusetts County Highest Peaks
This list features the highest natural elevation in each of the Commonwealth’s 14 counties—ranging from dramatic mountain summits to subtle rises in rolling terrain. It’s a great way to explore the full geographic variety of Massachusetts while checking off a peak in every corner of the state.
Peaks in the Mount Tom and Holyoke Ranges
The list has been posted and I am in the process of writing guides to the individual peaks–a work in progress.
Peaks of the Blue Hills
Coming soon, a guide to the various peaks in the Blue Hills. Some surprisingly good hiking.
